Black Key Etude

Go to this link if you want to watch our youngest daughter, Rachel, work her magic at the piano.  It was this piece that she played at the wedding luncheon.  Technology is wonderful to allow us to peek in at her recent NAU recital (virtually) even though we are a couple thousand miles away.

This is what she wrote about it:

"This year I have worked hard to learn Étude Op 10 No 5 by Frédéric Chopin. It has been given the nickname "Black Key" etude because Chopin wrote the melody exclusively on the black notes. This study etude is one of the most popular etudes in a pianist's repertoire. It is not surprising that it is so popular as this piece is described by many prominent people in music as playful, elegant, graceful, witty, delicate, glistening, enchanting, bubbly, brilliant, and tender. 

Upon pondering about this piece and the year I've had, I am reminded of an analogy that compares life to a piano. Imagine all the white keys represent good memories, smiles, laughter, and happy times. Likewise, imagine all the black keys represent stress, pain, loss, and times of trial. If I had one lesson to share with anyone about what I have learned this year, it is that as we go through life's journey we must always remember that the black keys also create beautiful, majestic, and joyful music."
