Two days ago we joined two other missionary couples, the Guthries and the Humpherys, and attended Rochester's annual Lilac Festival - a community-wide celebration filled with ten days of entertainment and fun.
It is inspired by a magnificent lilac collection at Highland Park that plays host to over 500 varieties of lilacs on more than 1,200 bushes. What was first planted in 1892 by horticulturist John Dunbar has turned into the world’s largest lilac collection.
Unfortunately, this year the lilacs had bloomed early; and the fragrant blossoms which are usually in rich abundance, were scarce and not the highlight of the morning.
As you will see from the pictures, there were other beautiful flowers and interesting plants and trees to admire and enjoy as we strolled through Highland Park. We ended our walk with a picnic on the lawn near Colgate Divinity School.
