Romance and Fairy Tales

Last Friday we traveled to Alexandria Bay on the St. Lawrence River (the northern-most border of New York) and took a boat across the channel to tour a magnificent castle, built in the early 1900's as a tribute to a beloved wife in the
 heart of the 1000 Islands.

Millionaire hotel magnate George C. Boldt designed the castle as a summer dream home. However it was not to be because Mrs. Boldt passed away suddenly just months before the completion of the castle. He was inconsolable and immediately stopped all construction on Heart Island, leaving the property vacant for over seventy years…

We had visited this tourist attraction three years ago, and it was so impressive that we wanted to return to see what changes have occurred.  The restoration of this castle is an on-going work.  On this trip, we saw for the first time the  restored kitchen and rooms adjacent to it.

Friday was a crisp (cold) autumn, windy day; and the boat ride was very choppy as we rode the rough waves.  We also saw many fall colors on the hillsides of upstate NY as the leaves have begun a transformation as well.

Below is a link to a slide-show of the various rooms in the castle.  In addition to the the beautifully restored rooms, on this trip we toured the unfinished third and fourth floors - something not open for us to see on our first trip. The view from these rooms looking out over the river and the hillsides beyond was breathtakingly beautiful.
