Thirty years ago, we received
the
best Christmas present ever!
Our first child was born, and we became new parents.
Being the oldest in the
family has a lot of perks. For the
first several months, they receive all the
attention of adoring parents and grandparents who sometimes tend to go
overboard in showering them with opportunities and “things” because they don’t
want their child to be lacking in any way.
Being the oldest also has
some drawbacks.
More is
expected. Sometimes they are more
protected
with tougher rules.
They
are the “first” at many things related to the family . . . like the first to
leave the nest and go to school, the first to take piano lessons, the first to
go on a date,
the first to drive, the first to get a job,
the first to graduate
from college, the first to marry.
Emily survived it all quite well.
Here are
some of her accomplishments:
- She earned her YW recognition award (comparable to an Eagle Award).
- She became very accomplished on the piano.
- She was in the Top Ten of her graduating class in high school.
- She was a National Merit Scholar.
- She spent a semester abroad in England.
- She served a mission in Ecuador.
- She graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in English and two minors: Women’s Studies and Editing.
- She completed her master’s in special ed while teaching for “Teach for America.”
- She teaches writing classes at the community college.
- She found her love and married in the temple.
- She became the most important person in the world to two precious little girls.
We are very proud of you,
Emily.
What an example and friend you
have been
and are to your younger siblings.
We love you and will be thinking of you!
