We decided to revisit a couple of church sites
during our break between temple shifts this past week. It was a cooler
day and kind of overcast, so we went to the top of the Hill Cumorah and
had a picnic in a shaded, wooded area. It was quiet and secluded and very
nice.
Next we drove 3 miles and spent an hour strolling through the
Sacred Grove. Although we have been there a half dozen times, this was our favorite trip thus far because we were alone and not in a hurry, and because the peace was so
strong . . . like sitting in the Celestial room at the temple.
We went to
a spot we had never been to before in search of “Michael’s tree.” This was the name we gave to a place where
our children had visited in May during the wedding activities. Although we were not with them, they had taken a
bunch of pictures. I especially
loved the one of our grandson Michael sitting in this one particular and distinctive tree.
Once we found the spot, we sat on a
bench and talked. This area was among what are called the "witness
trees" . . .
trees so old that they were surely there when the prophet Joseph offered
his prayer that resulted in the appearance of God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
The sun broke through the canopy of leaves and
illuminated a spot near us. It was such a beautiful moment and hard to describe due to how very sacred and still and peaceful it was.
A thunderstorm started to roll through, so we thought it best to be on our way even though we hated to leave. We made
it to the barn near the Smith home where we took refuge from the rain for a few
minutes. It was a memorable afternoon spent together in a significant and sacred spot.
When we got
back to the temple, I was assigned as guide to a sister going through the
temple for the first time. It was a fitting conclusion to a wonderful
day!
