Some of the most impressive
ruins we saw on our trip were those found at Bet She’an. We stopped there briefly on our way
back from the Galilee. It is a city in the North District of Israel which has played an important role historically due to its geographical location at the junction of the Jordan River Valley and Jezreel Valley. The
ancient city ruins are now protected as an Israeli national park. It extends
over an area of 400 acres, includes the ancient city of Bet She’an-Scythopolis
and the imposing Tel Bet She’an.
Major excavations have been going on since 1986 and have uncovered about
one-tenth of the city’s area.
These excavations are accompanied by architectural reconstruction of
buildings, installations, and streets.
